1. IntroductionMendoza’s History of the Great and Mighty Kingdom of China has had a significant impact since its inaugural publication in Rome in 1585. Over the subsequent four centuries, the text has exerted considerable influence across the field of international scholarship. Scholars from a multitude of linguistic backgrounds, including those from Hispanic, English, and Chinese-speaking countries, have engaged with this book.

After the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation, as well as the Counter-Reformation, Europe gradually entered modern society. The European perspective on China during this transitional era deserves special attention.
