The Blue Lagoon in Malta is the latest travel destination to see action limiting the volume of visitors to a beloved natural and cultural site to protect it from overtourism. On May 2, the Malta Tourism Authority announced that the number of daily visitors to the Blue Lagoon will be capped at 4,000 people daily. On some summer days last year, the lagoon saw as many as 12,000 visitors per day.

A group called Southern Europe Network Against Touristification (SET Network) is organizing protests against overtourism across Europe this summer, with some protestors planning to wield water pistols in symbolic attacks on tourists. June 15 is the target date for protests in Italy, Portugal, and Spain, including destinations like Venice, Lisbon, Palermo, Barcelona and the Canary Islands.

Japan is considering new fees and restrictions on certain travel perks as the country grapples with overtourism. For example, the fee charged to foreigners who want to climb Mount Fuji will double this summer, to 4,000 yen (about $28). Himeji Castle will charge visitors from outside western Japan between 2,000 and 3,000 yen admission, compared to 1,000 for locals, beginning in March 2026. In March, nine cities and two prefectures in Japan will start charging an accommodation tax for the first time.

More than 320,000 seats have been removed by airlines operating U.S.-Canada routes between now and October as the Trump administration’s policies toward its northern neighbor take their toll on travel. Driven by weakened demand—passenger bookings on Canada-U.S. routes are down 70 percent compared to 2024—airlines have cut capacity by 3.5 percent in July and August, typically the busiest months for cross-border travel, according to aviation analytics firm OAG.
