Nothing spells romance quite like a candlelight dinner on a powdery white sand beach, with the sun dipping behind the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. And when it comes to romantic experiences, the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda literally won the prize for it (in fact, it won it three years in a row by World Travel Awards).

“I think your hotel is on Table Mountain.”  My driver smiles as he winds along Cape Town’s steep, tree-lined streets framed by hibiscus and protea (South Africa’s national flower). “You may be right,” I laugh, the iconic, stealth rock seemingly just steps away by the time he rolls to a stop in front of uber-modern Atzaró Cape Town — a once exclusive-use villa turned intimate hotel.

Last year I spent four blissful days on the Caribbean island of Antigua. At Curtain Bluff, the island’s only Relais and Chateaux property, I climbed the “stairway to heaven” (a.k.a. Bluff House) to watch the sun set, snorkeled daily from the resort’s dive boat, sipped fresh coconut water under towering palms, and — with my own private tour guide — explored the verdant island, learning about its blouse-and-skirt houses, nautical heritage, and newly emerging gin-making culture.

Ever since it opened almost two decades ago, Hermitage Bay was a breath of fresh air in Antigua: simple, intimate, and lovely. It didn’t have the over-the-top opulence of Jumby Bay, nor the extensive program and fun-for-the-whole-family vibe of Carlisle Bay. (Both of which are outstanding hotels, by the way.) Rather, it was a come-as-you-are collection of just about two dozen rooms with a perfect little white sand beach.

Six years ago, my husband and I visited Kennebunkport for the first time. From that moment, I was completely hooked. Maybe it’s the fresh lobster rolls that taste like a buttery slice of heaven, or the quiet, intimate beaches where the waves gently roll in, creating the perfect backdrop for a long, lazy afternoon. It could be the nautical dining scene, where cozy waterfront restaurants serve up classic New England fare with a side of salty ocean air.
