The greenery is astounding. From inside the glass funicular tramway — inching its way up the steep incline to Hong Kong’s famous lookout Peak — I peer onto lush palms and reddish crotons. Intellectually, I know of the city’s verdant nature. Expat friends who now live here and hotel staff eager to share the beauty of their city (home to 7.4 million residents) continuously sing praises of Hong Kong’s lush greenery, tropical flowers, rubber trees, sandy beaches, and seemingly endless walking paths.

When I went to Zurich a few months ago, I expected to eat well: creamy milk chocolate, unctuous Emmenthal cheese, rösti potatoes, maybe a pot of gently bubbling fondue. Going to Switzerland always has a way of making me feel grateful about being lactose tolerant. I even expected to eat fancy. I’d been invited by the Dolder Grand Hotel to dine at its Michelin two-star establishment.

At Kempinski Palace Engelberg, I step out onto my Belle Epoque balcony, its rim edged in Art Nouveau iron curlicues, gaze at prodigious Mount Titlis, and take a deep breath. I inhale gulps of fresh mountain air with gusto, letting it flow into every cell of my body. The healing, whether imagined or mystically real, happens immediately. I relax. I awaken. I fuse with the surrounding mountain scape and unspoiled central Swiss village that dominates my eyeshot. I vow to never be stressed again.

All is still and steamy on Rinca Island, equal parts earthy tans and dense greens, save for a long, yellowish tongue flicking about. It’s the forked tongue of a Komodo dragon, a creature that — more than any other — defines the word ancient. And it’s not only the look of the appendage that I find disconcerting — it’s what it means.

Mexico’s coastal gems — Cancún, Riviera Maya, Mayakoba, and beyond — are far more than just postcard-perfect destinations. They’re places where you can grab a particularly well-made margarita beachside (but who’s stopping at one?), or find solitude in private accommodations where no one will see you plunge topless (or totally nude) in your private pool. But these properties are more than sun-soaked beaches and beach clubs — they are also home to world-class spas.
