The 1930s saw the Goudey Gum Company produce some iconic cards of baseball stars. North of the border, Canadian-based World Wide Gum produced a similar version, but with several key differences. A complete, 96-card set of the 1934 World Wide Gum set, commonly called the “Canadian Goudey,” is part of Heritage Auctions’ Winter Sports Catalog Auction that runs from Dec. 5 to Dec. 7. What makes this set — catalogued as V354 — so special is that it is the No. 1 All-Time Finest set on the PSA registry.

Panini America’s 2024-25 Hoops basketball kicks off the new calendar year with a new class of rookies. The annual lower cost flagship NBA product makes its return after debuting for the 1989-90 season. A hobby box will contain 24 packs, with eight cards in each pack. Panini has not announced how many total cards will be in the base set this year, but the 2023-24 set had 300. The company did say that there would be a 50-player rookie base set.

The Classic Baseball Era Committee has announced that eight players are being considered for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Four of them won Most Valuable Player awards, six appeared in the World Series, one had a medical procedure named for him and two starred in the Negro Leagues. On Dec. 8, some of them may add another accolade — enshrinement into the baseball shrine in Cooperstown.

As the 2024 NFL season nears the halfway mark, the Detroit Lions are again making a strong bid to reach their first Super Bowl. The Lions reeled off five straight wins after a 1-1 start; combined with last year’s visit to the NFC Championship Game, Detroit is giving fans in the Motor City reason to hope for the franchise’s first NFL title since the 1957 season. Topps’ 1957 set was the first major football issue to be printed in the now-standard 2½ inches-by-3½ inches format.
