Willie Mays hit 660 home runs during his Hall of Fame career. Jim Beauchamp hit 14 during his 10 years in the majors. And yet, both share a common bond. Or in this case, a bat. The bat that Mays used to hit his final career home run belonged to Beauchamp, his teammate on the New York Mets in 1973. Mays connected off Cincinnati’s Don Gullett in the fourth inning at Shea Stadium on Aug. 17, 1973, a solo shot that was the only run in the Mets’ 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Reds.

Anybody who’s been around baseball for more than half a century has heard the questions more than he or she would want to admit. But I can say this — there was a time when Willie Mays obviously was the best player I’d NEVER seen.
