The Southport Police Department, which was the last occupant of the old city hall/historic courthouse that has been vacant for nine years, will return to the E. Moore Street building. With a 4-2 vote during the April 10 meeting at the Southport Community Building, the Southport Board of Aldermen designated old city hall for dual use by the police with the second-floor former courtroom to serve as chambers for the city’s boards. Aldermen Robert Carroll and Karen Mosteller voted against the motion.

An alarm has been sounded that Brunswick County’s fire fee system is not working. “The current funding model of the fire fee, I’m afraid, has reached its limit and it’s not a sustainable funding mechanism to take us into the future with the emergency services,” Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said in his report during the Southport Board of Aldermen’s April 10 meeting.

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners approved the sale of 22 acres in Leland Innovation Park to US MgO Co. for economic development purposes during its April 7 meeting. The company has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility on the site that the county said will create at least 35 new jobs and $5 million in new investments. County staff have determined the sale to be the fair market value of $35,000 an acre, said County Attorney Bryan Batton.
