Portishead’s Dummy was released kind of just as I was beginning to grow more music obsessed as a proto-adolescent (I was 12 or 13 I think) and as a grunge-obsessed kid, the idea of “trip-hop” was sort of outside my wheelhouse, but I wasn’t necessarily opposed to it.

In 1978, Tuff Gong/Island Records released the album Kaya by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Among the tracks on the album was Crisis, which Marley wrote, and which featured musicians such as Junior Marvin, Tyrone Downie, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Winston Grennan, Alvin Patterson, Vincent Gordon, and Glen DaCosta. Crisis received a new lease on life when it was sampled by Marley’s grandson, YG Marley, in his international hit Praise Jah in the Moonlight.
