Kent’s newest McDonald’s is set to open earlier than expected. The US fast food giant will take up a prime position at Chatham Dockside in a major boost to the shopping centre’s plans to become a “regional retail and leisure destination”. Work is underway to transform the unit formerly occupied by long-standing tenant Choice, which relocated elsewhere in the outlet. It will be the eighth McDonald’s franchise in Medway, the last opening at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre last March.

The longstanding boss of a charity launched after the closure of a psychiatric hospital says the service is as vital as ever as people “struggle to cope with the modern world”. Barrie Gore, credited by organisation volunteers for helping to save hundreds of lives, has stepped down after almost 40 years at the helm of the Canterbury Umbrella Centre.

A group of Travellers have left a country park after police were called. About 30 vehicles pitched up on the field at the Holy Trinity Church end of Milton Creek Country Park near Sittingbourne last Sunday (June 1). They had moved on from nearby Milton Regis Recreation Ground, where they had been since May 26. It was the second time Travellers had visited that green space in a month. Today it was confirmed the group had left Milton Creek Country Park.

Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf has returned to the party just 48 hours after quitting. He announced his departure on social media on Thursday, just days after a visit to Kent where he was launching his Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) team to look into the county council’s finances after taking control of the local authority in May. In his resignation message he declared his work for Nigel Farage was no longer a “good use of my time”.
