    It’s a tradition that has carried on for more than 100 years at La Crosse Central…the high school’s annual Memorial Day ceremony, outdoors along Losey Boulevard. Students, veterans, and many others gathered Friday morning for the early observance of Memorial Day. The local event is now in its 103rd year, and usually happens the Friday before the holiday. That also coincides with Central’s graduation ceremony, later the same day.

    Memorial Day activities around the La Crosse area generally include parades, and ceremonies in local parks and cemeteries, along with many family picnics and cookouts. The traditions for the day include solemn ceremonies at sites including Oak Grove Cemetery. In 1913, members of the Grand Army of the Republic, veterans of the Civil War from 50 years earlier, gathered at Oak Grove to dedicate the Soldier’s Monument there.

    La Crosse’s Kwik Trip continues to be the favorite gas station chain in America, according to new nationwide rankings by USA Today. The local company has topped the newspaper’s gas station survey for six years in a row, also getting the top vote for the store chain with the best food. Kwik Trip has almost 900 locations in six states, sometimes under the Kwik Star name. The USA Today list happens to be led by three chains all based in either Wisconsin or Iowa.

    The defendant in a 2019 murder in La Crosse will be tried next month, even though he says he’s not ready for a trial. Anquin St. Junious says he would like to represent himself at the trial scheduled to begin on June 9th, because he can’t afford to hire a defense lawyer. Judge Ramona Gonzalez said in court on Thursday that an attorney is assigned to the case for now, and the trial will move ahead as scheduled.

    An area Congressman is defending his vote for a federal budget which could reduce funding for SNAP benefits and Medicaid. Democrats claim that through his vote on the budget, Representative Derrick Van Orden voted in favor of cuts to benefits for families that need help with food and medical care. Republican Van Orden says the bill does not make cuts to the benefit program, but is aimed at fighting fraud in the system.
