WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The China Spring ISD School Board recognized their first Special Olympics team at the district. The ceremony was held on Aug. 19 during a school board meeting. The student-athletes received their athletic letter jacket and patches, along with a certificate of their accomplishments. “When you have athletes that are this brave and courageous and able to show you what pure happiness looks like, it reminds you life is good,” said Special Olympics Coach Bradley Settles.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The McLennan County Republican Club held its monthly luncheon on Aug. 15 with guest speaker Sheriff Roy Boyd of Goliad County. Sheriff Boyd spoke about the current working with Operation Lone Star Taskforce, a collation of sheriff’s departments working together to stop illegal immigration and drugs crossing into Texas from Mexico. Sheriff Boyd praised the work done by the taskforce in curbing illegal activity from crossing the border.

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) - Temple ISD celebrated the grand opening of Sampson-Howard Elementary School on Friday. Sampson-Howard Elementary is the first brand new campus Temple ISD has opened in more than 25 years. The school covers 102,000 square feet and can hold almost 800 students. The campus has 36 classrooms and 15 special spaces including a fine arts room, life skills/special needs rooms, a computer lab, gymnasium, flex rooms and flex learning spaces.

BELLMEAD, Texas (KWTX) - The city of Bellmead is working in collaboration with Waco-McLennan County Public Health District and Creative Waco artist on new “Sidewalk Chalk Obstacle Courses” at two of the city parks. Brame Park and Devorsky Park’s new Sidewalk Chalk Obstacle courses were designed by local 5th graders, who used their imagination to create an artwork draft of their dream obstacle course.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Registration is open for the “Mentoring Alliance After School” program in Robinson and Waco ISD. The program provides a safe place for kindergarten through sixth grade students from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. While at the program, students can receive help with their homework and have opportunities to release their energy by playing sports and games. Parents can also allow their children to participate in a weekly Bible study led by staff members.
