U.P. man found guilty of murder, child abuse after toddler died in his care

MARQUETTE, MI – A jury in the Upper Peninsula has found a man guilty of murder and first-degree child abuse. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Andrew Byerly Birge announced the verdict against Eugene Walter-George Rantanen, 37, of L’Anse on Friday. The conviction comes in connection to an incident that occurred on Feb. 19, 2024, when 19-month-old toddler became unresponsive while in the sole custody of Rantanen at the L’Anse Reservation of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
Michigan school employee allegedly hit 6-year-old student with shoe

MACOMB COUNTY, MI – A former Michigan school employee is accused of assaulting a first-grade student with a shoe. Kimberley Horen, 53, of Eastpointe has been charged with assault and battery, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced Friday. Horen, a paraprofessional at Forest Park Elementary in Eastpointe, allegedly took a shoe off a 6-year-old student with autism and struck him on the head with it.

Officials have determined the cause of death for a former Ohio State offensive lineman. The Clark County Coroner’s Office in Nevada told WKYC-TV in Cleveland that Ben Christman died from heart disease (cardiomyopathy) and an irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmia). He was 21. Christman, a senior who had joined UNLV’s football team after transferring from Kentucky, was found dead at an off-campus apartment in February.
Missing man, abandoned car found, foul play suspected

EATON COUNTY, MI – The body of a missing man has been found in Eaton County. The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that Gregory Brian Pennington, 42, of Nashville, Michigan was found in Chester Township on April 29. His case is being investigated as an apparent homicide. Officials had been looking for Pennington since he was reported missing on Dec. 12, 2024. He hadn’t been seen since Nov. 14, 2024 and his abandoned vehicle was found in the 4000 Block of Michigan Road on Dec. 11, 2024.
Boy, 15, charged after student suffers gunshot wound on school bus

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI – A 15-year-old boy has been charged after a student was accidentally shot on a school bus. According to the Redford Township Police Department, the shooting occurred at Thurston High School near Schoolcraft Road on May 7. Police say a student brought an unsecured handgun to school in his backpack and was handling the gun when it discharged, hitting another boy in the left hand.
Suspect accused of carjacking elderly woman nabbed by state police K9

DETROIT – A man wanted for carjacking an elderly woman was arrested after being tracked and detained by a police dog. The incident involving the Michigan State Police K9 occurred on Freeland Street near Keeler Street in Detroit at 7:44 a.m. on Wednesday. Police say two suspects had pointed a gun at an elderly woman, robbed her and took her vehicle. K9-21 canvassed the neighborhoods near the scene and located the vehicle. When troopers attempted a stop, the driver fled the scene.

DETROIT – Four former champions have committed to play in Detroit’s PGA Tour event. Organizers announced Thursday that Cameron Davis, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Nate Lashley will be among the field when the newly named Rocket Classic returns to Detroit Golf Club, June 25-29. Davis, an Australian, became the only two-time winner of the Rocket Classic last year, having also won the tournament following a five-hole playoff in 2021.

MISSAUKEE COUNTY, MI – A man who went missing from a crash scene has been found dead in Northern Michigan. UpNorthLive reported Wednesday that the body of Dale Fasking, 66 of Traverse City was found about a mile away from Nelson Road and Coombs Road in Missaukee County’s Norwich Township. Deputies with the Missaukee County Sheriff’s Office previously said he had left the scene on foot after a crash, according to the TV station.
