“The Penguin” isn’t just good, it’s great. Years of subpar and formulaic Marvel shows have likely driven my standards for these projects into the basement. As such, I can’t help but to review them on a curve. This show in particular reminds me of what I’ve been missing, especially in terms of layered characters, which Marvel doesn’t do. Its lead, Oswald Cobb (Colin Farrell) is one of the best examples of this in the show.

If you’re a fan of “Agatha All Along,” my biggest piece of advice for you is: Don’t watch “The Penguin.” It blows this show out of the water and makes every one of its flaws glaringly obvious. “The Penguin” is something special; for all it does right, “Agatha” just can’t compete with it. In order to enjoy “Agatha,” you really have to view it through the lens of likewise Marvel projects, which it’s an above-average example of.

M. Night Shyamalan clearly has the talent and vision to still create captivating thrillers, as is evident by “The Visit,” “Split” and “Old,” which revived his career after the spectacular failure of 2013’s “After Earth.” But he’s also more than capable of getting in his own way.

There is something about J.N. Chaney and his work that has kept me coming back to his literary worlds with childlike eagerness. I like to believe that he and his many co-authors who have built these respective works with him have produced a plethora of ones with very different flavors, even if some are closely related in theme. Such is the case with his latest series, Void Drifter, the product of a brilliant collaboration between Chaney and Jason Anspach.
