    Close to 200 Greater Fort Erie Secondary School (GFESS) students will be hitting the dance floor in a couple of weekends to celebrate a major chapter of their lives coming to a close. Prom night is set for June 13 at The Brock Niagara Falls-Fallsview and although it will be a memorable occasion, it may also be expensive. That’s why more than 20 students took several hours out of their Saturday to participate in a car wash fundraiser, bringing in money to offset the cost of the event.

    An effort to restore an aircraft that has been on display near Sugarbowl Park for nearly 25 years is in need of community support. A pasta dinner will be held Saturday at the Royal Canadian Legion branch on Garrison Road to support the cause, which has an estimated price tag of about $30,000, says Lesley Kinghorn, a legion member who is involved with the project. About $4,000 has been raised so far, and Kinghorn hopes that corporate donations will play a role in reaching the goal.

    There is a new local source of people who will enter the workforce through programs being offered under the roof of Fort Erie International Academy (FEIA), a private boarding school that has been operating out of the former Fort Erie Secondary School since 2019. In 2023, Sheridan College at CCTT (Canadian of Technology and Trades) opened at the site and has been training hundreds of international students to be ready for jobs in the trades.

    The Peace Bridge Duty Free is in debt by more than $20 million, according to a report published by the Canadian Press (CP). A judge is ordering the duty-free shop in Fort Erie at Canada’s second-busiest border crossing into receivership as it struggles to pay off debt and overdue rent.

    A flurry of vandalism and theft on the weekend in the Ridgeway-Thunder Bay area is being investigated by Niagara Regional Police (NRP). In a statement to Fort Erie Radio on Monday, NRP spokesperson Constable Phil Gavin said there are four incidents of vehicles being entered into and stolen from. Additionally, one car had its window smashed but did not appear subjected to theft, said Gavin. A car was also stolen, a black 2010 Mazda hatchback.
