Published 4:00 pm Monday, April 14, 2025 DJ Lucy scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Sweet Water a 12-11 win over Excel on Wednesday April 2. The Bulldogs got into a seesaw battle with Excel. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the second inning including a home run by Tim Kelley to take a 5-1 lead. Excel got the lead back with seven runs in the third inning. Sweet Water chipped away at the lead with a two-run fourth inning.

Published 3:30 pm Monday, April 14, 2025 The Sweet Water Lady Bulldogs softball team got a big win over Holy Spirit 17-2 on Thursday. Sweet Water pounded out 12 hits in the win. They were led by Addison Griffith who was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Raegan Averette was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Marley Miller added a triple and a double with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Published 3:00 pm Monday, April 14, 2025 The Demopolis Lady Tigers stayed in the hunt for a regular season area championship by defeating Jemison 11-0 and Montevallo 8-5 last week. In tournament play on Friday and Saturday, the Lady Tigers lost four games to Gordo 6-0, John Carroll 10-9, West Blocton 8-2 and John Carroll again 10-4. The Lady Tigers (10-20) traveled to American Christian Academy on Tuesday, April 8. The game had not been played as of press time.

The group was brought to the city through the Selma Ripple Initiative through the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business. Preston McGee, community outreach coordinator, said the goal is to not only help the students give back to the city, but it also exposes them to the Queen City.

I love seeing upsets and watching players I fall in love with over the course of three weeks. Some players earn their spot of immortality when they hit a buzzer beater that lifts their team to a win over an underdog. Recently, however, I have had personal rooting interests. The event features a number of Selma and Dallas County connections with the event. It starts with Dr. Bruce E. Taylor, who practice in Selma for a long time before moving to Montgomery. He said this event is a way to give back to the community by having a fun, safe event for all.
