That’s what the county is looking into, as they get set to invite developers to make a pitch. Developers will be asked to pitch their proposal on how to handle a relatively small solar project, between 20 to 25 acres, on the southern side of the airport property.

Specifically, the Virginia Loggers Association want to be exempt from personal property, machinery and tools taxes on forest harvesting equipment. Supervisors meanwhile say they’re willing to have discussions, but can’t promise cuts from a budget already stretched thin.

    Published 11:10 pm Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Eight previously approved solar farms are still being planned for in Cumberland County, although several have hit a snag. Over the last month, Cumberland officials updated the planning commission with those changes, reminding them in their Monday, June 16 meeting that two other would not move forward at all. Let’s go over the active ones first. One of the most recent approvals, Hecate Solar, is in a holding pattern of sorts.

    Published 9:30 pm Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Buckingham supervisors started off their June 9 meeting with a tribute. They honored Nora Atkinson with a resolution, showing respect for the many ways she helped county residents and organizations during her life. Supervisor Paul Garrett had originally proposed the resolution, which had been unanimously approved during the group’s May meeting. Atkinson passed away back on May 5 at the age of 90, after a life of service.

    Published 12:57 am Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Michael and Helen Royea had one request for supervisors on Tuesday. They did want to get their application for a Rice events center approved, but they also wanted to be allowed to have larger crowds than what the planning commission recommended. The property in question is located at 25943 Prince Edward Highway and sits on 136 acres.
