Over the last month, Cumberland officials updated the planning commission with those changes, reminding them in their Monday, June 16 meeting that two other would not move forward at all. Let’s go over the active ones first. One of the most recent approvals, Hecate Solar, is in a holding pattern of sorts.

    Published 9:30 pm Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Buckingham supervisors started off their June 9 meeting with a tribute. They honored Nora Atkinson with a resolution, showing respect for the many ways she helped county residents and organizations during her life. Supervisor Paul Garrett had originally proposed the resolution, which had been unanimously approved during the group’s May meeting. Atkinson passed away back on May 5 at the age of 90, after a life of service.

They did want to get their application for a Rice events center approved, but they also wanted to be allowed to have larger crowds than what the planning commission recommended. The property in question is located at 25943 Prince Edward Highway and sits on 136 acres.

The group competed at last week’s Virginia FFA Convention, while one of their members earned a state degree, the latest in a number of Cumberland students so honored. All total, 10 of Cumberland’s FFA members made the trip to the 99th Virginia FFA State Convention, held on the campus of Virginia Tech.
