Growing up on the banks of the Lower American River in a Sacramento suburb, Karl Bly would join his father in a sit-on-top kayak while searching for “treasures” beneath the surface of the stream. “I’d just follow the air bubbles of his scuba gear,” recalled Bly, now 57 and still living in Carmichael. “My siblings and I were out there almost every summer weekend.”Once, when he was around 10, Bly was paddling a big canoe by himself when some adults saw him alone on the river and grew concerned.
