    Holly Kernan will take over as CEO of Nashville Public Radio, the station announced Tuesday. She succeeds Steve Swenson, who is retiring. “I’m thrilled to help shepherd this next phase of community service and to embrace my new home in Nashville,” she said in the announcement. Kernan was most recently chief content officer at KQED in San Francisco. She joined the organization in 2014 as executive editor of news. Kernan also worked for more than a decade as news director at KALW in San Francisco.

    As he describes it, Scott Smith lives “back in the sticks,” an hour and a half from the nearest Walmart. Smith, GM of Allegheny Mountain Radio, said he’s approaching businesses far outside his listening area — but where people in his “extremely rural area” of West Virginia and Virginia shop — to buy sponsorships. It’s one option he’s exploring to keep the station going in the face of federal funding threats.

    Anne Pitts Marozas began as executive director of Marfa Public Radio in Texas Monday. She succeeds Elise Pepple, who stepped down in March. “Public radio is part of the fabric of a community, and I’m honored to help Marfa Public Radio deepen and expand that role,” Marozas said in an announcement on the station’s website. She was previously executive director of the Levitt Shell, a historic amphitheater in Memphis, Tenn. She also advised on the development of community radio station WYXR in Memphis.

    New York’s governor signed a budget bill last week that included $4 million in state funding to public radio stations. The funding is in addition to the state’s regular annual appropriation to public broadcasters, which was more than $14 million in the fiscal year 2026 budget. $13 million of that goes to public television, according to a press release from New York Public Radio. According to the bill, the $4 million will be divided evenly among New York public radio stations.

    WQED in Pittsburgh, Pa., has suspended The Creator Academy, a youth media education program, as the station navigates “unprecedented threats to federal funding for the arts, education, and public broadcasting,” CEO Jason Jedlinski confirmed to Current in an email. Five employees working with the academy were laid off, including four full-time staff and one part-time staffer, Jedlinski wrote.
