In a stunning reversal from the Catholic Diocese of Camden this week, Bishop Joseph A. Williams said his diocese will no longer oppose a statewide investigation of sexual abuse by clergy. According to an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer on Monday, Williams said he asked the church’s attorneys to send a letter to the state Supreme Court about the shift in position. The diocese had been secretly waging the fight behind closed doors for the last six years.

Higher education funding is back on the chopping block in Gov. Phil Murphy’s proposed budget. College and university leaders from around the state testified before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee Thursday, pleading once again for their combined $20 million in operating aid to be restored. Similar cuts to county colleges were proposed in last year’s budget but were ultimately restored.

The New Jersey Supreme Court on Monday heard arguments in the seven-year battle over allegations of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. The court heard arguments from attorneys for the Catholic Diocese of Camden, which filed for bankruptcy in 2020, and the New Jersey attorney general’s office. “The goal here is obviously to condemn the Catholic Church and priests and bishops,” said Lloyd Levenson, attorney for the diocese.

A state grand jury will not file criminal charges against the Jersey City police officers involved in the 2023 fatal shooting of Andrew Washington. Last year, Washington’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city for the department’s response to Washington’s mental health crisis, alleging officers failed to de-escalate the situation. The family said that they called a mental health hotline while Washington was in the throes of a mental health crisis, asking for an ambulance.
