    Lake Belton senior Maddison Ruiz won the Texas Built Ford Tough Class 5A Female Athlete of the Month for May. Ruiz went 20-3 in the pitching circle for the Lady Broncos’ softball team in the 2025 season, amassing 261 strikeouts while carrying a 0.83 ERA. She tossed two perfect games and two more no-hitters, and beat national No. 1-ranked Melissa, 1-0, in Game 1 of the regional final on a two-hitter. She also had a 20-strikeout game.

    For the second consecutive year, the National Player of the Year resides at McLennan Community College. MCC sophomore Trinity Allen won the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Year honor for NJCAA Div. I, that organization announced Tuesday. Last year, MCC’s Katia Reyes was the NFCA Player of the Year. Allen, a first baseman from Cypress Bridgeland High School, demonstrated a dominant hitting stroke all season.

Major League Baseball didn’t need to ban defensive shifts, because batsmen were actually capable of hitting a ball to any part of the field. A mustachioed, sweet-swinging Padre named Tony Gwynn struck out a meager 21 times per season. Every team had a .300 hitter, and usually more than one. Wait, kids, why are you walking away?

Now, we’ve just got to get some people healthy and get ready to go to Oregon,” Baylor head coach Michael Ford said.
