A major Sydney university has become the latest institution to roll out huge cost-cutting measures, with hundreds of jobs set for the chopping block. Western Sydney University is expected to cut up to 400 jobs to help cope with an almost 80 million deficit in 2026 amid a “large deterioration” in student numbers. It comes after the University of Technology Sydney announced last week it could axe 400 jobs as part of a plan to cut $100 million.

The parents of a baby girl who died at Sydney’s troubled Northern Beaches Hospital have shared their “anger and frustration” over the tragedy, alleging time delays contributed to what they believe was the “completely avoidable” death of their daughter. Sydney couple Leah Pitman and Dustin Atkinson lost their baby daughter, Harper, in February, shortly after a problematic birth.

As Donald Trump’s trade war with China deepens, the Asian powerhouse has been left “unfazed” by mounting tariffs, a Chinese journalist has claimed, warning the US doesn’t “understand what the Chinese are capable of”. The US President announced on Wednesday he was slapping 125 per cent tariffs on China after it retaliated by matching US tariffs. China responded with yet another escalation, bumping up its tariffs on all goods imported from the United States to 84 per cent.
