An academic has warned that the UK is at risk of evolving “into a propaganda regime” following interviews with dozens of journalists about the state of Freedom of Information (FOI) laws. Jingrong Tong, a senior lecturer in Media and Information Studies at the University of Sheffield, said decreased compliance with FOI rules had resulted in “growing government secrecy”. Tong interviewed 31 journalists from around the UK for the study, which was published in the academic journal Journalism Practice.

Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal UK management have halted voluntary recognition talks with the National Union of Journalists to instead recognise News Union, the union funded by its sister company News UK. Managers told staff on Tuesday afternoon it was doing this because the NUJ “would only represent a small subset of our colleagues”, whereas News Union “are able to represent all eligible Dow Jones International employees, not just those in the Newsroom”.

The Investigatory Powers Tribunal has rejected a Home Office bid to impose total secrecy around its efforts to gain access to Apple users’ data. Apple is appealing to the IPT over a government technical capability notice (TCN) which would require it to provide the Home Office with access to its customers’ most highly-encrypted data.

ITN recorded its lowest profit in a decade in 2024 as its non-news revenue dropped 41% year on year. The broadcaster, which produces daily news programmes for ITV, Channel 4 and 5, saw pre-tax profit nearly halve year on year from £1.5m in 2023 to £800,000 in 2024. Overall revenue at the broadcaster dipped £5m (or 3%) year-on-year to £150.7m according to accounts newly filed at Companies House.

Daily Mail and New Scientist publisher DMGT has signed a deal to license its journalism for development for film, television and streaming. The company said in a release that its agreement with Storied Media Group aimed “to capitalise on the growing demand for deeply researched journalism in the film and TV industry”.
