Most of the candidates for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country faced off in the Coast’s first all-candidates meeting for the 45th Canadian general election, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Labour Council at Elphinstone Secondary School Monday night. Candidates parried as they navigated questions on health care, affordability, jobs and economy and pensions.

The following are briefs from the March 27 Sunshine Coast Regional District committee of the whole and regular board meetings. The SCRD is getting started on amending its water licence for Chapman Creek in anticipation of the Lower Crown reservoir. Though it’s understood final confirmation from the SCRD for construction and a lot of feasibility work is still to come, the province advised SCRD staff to get the amendment process started, lest it hold up the project.

It appears a “weak, late-season” tornado contributed to storm damage on the Sunshine Coast Monday. Following up on a video posted to Facebook and looking at radar data, Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Ken Dosanjh, said they’re preliminarily calling the event an EF 0 on the enhanced Fujita scale. While donning orange shirts, Sechelt council compelled Mayor John Henderson not to engage with shíshálh Nation as a representative of the municipality, following receipt of a letter from the First Nation. On Sept. 25, council appointed acting mayor (essentially deputy mayor) Brenda Rowe as Indigenous relations liaison, to “help build constructive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities” and improve the relationship between the Nation and district council.

The son of a Vancouver man who died on a logging road on the Sunshine Coast a year ago has been charged with first-degree murder. Where there’s smoke, there’ll soon be a bylaw. Gibsons is introducing a new bylaw to regulate indoor burning, something that’s currently unrestricted and unregulated within the town and which has been a source of consternation for residents and a headache for bylaw enforcement. The new bylaw, which passed three readings at a June 4 council meeting, prohibits the burning of materials that create “noxious odour or heavy smoke” within the town.
