Most of the candidates for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country faced off in the Coast’s first all-candidates meeting for the 45th Canadian general election, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Labour Council at Elphinstone Secondary School Monday night. Candidates parried as they navigated questions on health care, affordability, jobs and economy and pensions.

The following are briefs from the March 27 Sunshine Coast Regional District committee of the whole and regular board meetings. The SCRD is getting started on amending its water licence for Chapman Creek in anticipation of the Lower Crown reservoir. Though it’s understood final confirmation from the SCRD for construction and a lot of feasibility work is still to come, the province advised SCRD staff to get the amendment process started, lest it hold up the project.

Squamish councillor Lauren Greenlaw has been tapped as the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country Green Party candidate for the upcoming federal election. It appears a “weak, late-season” tornado contributed to storm damage on the Sunshine Coast Monday. Following up on a video posted to Facebook and looking at radar data, Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Ken Dosanjh, said they’re preliminarily calling the event an EF 0 on the enhanced Fujita scale. (On the six-point scale, zero is the weakest and five is the strongest.)“We did see fallen trees along a path, fallen power lines and some road blockages as well,” he said.
