Home In the Community Music and merriment carried the day June 7 as Egmont’s streets (and harbour) were filled to the brim with locals and visitors delighting in all things Egmont. The festivities –– held the first Saturday in June annually –– included a kids fishing derby, cake walk, dunk tank, parade, BBQ, laser tag and more.

True to form, Chris Hergesheimer used his platform, upon receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal, to call for transformation. Colleagues, bandmates, family and friends gathered at Seaside Centre Monday to celebrate Hergesheimer’s award. In the ceremony MC’d by friend and former campaign manager Steve Wright, colleagues offered praise to the passionate community advocate, who, among many other hats, is lead food programmer for Sunshine Coast Community Services Society (SCCSS).

Faced with an elderly man with health issues who refused to leave the shed where he was living, and with winter looming, bylaw officer Stephen Lanegraff knew ticketing him wasn’t the answer. It was the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) officer’s compassionate response to the file, which was an exceptional case in an unfortunately growing trend of precarious housing, that earned him a leadership award from the Local Government Compliance and Enforcement Association earlier this year.

After hiring a program lead in February and a pair of peer coordinators just a couple of weeks ago, the organization dedicated to addressing the toxic drug crisis through community collaboration is ready for its re-launch open house, June 24.
