The federal government has quietly increased the contract price being paid to Seaspan Shipyards to build two massive navy joint support ships by almost $1 billion. Ottawa put out an emailed statement on the contract increase Aug. 2. Four years ago, in June 2020, the federal government awarded a build contract to Seaspan for the full construction of the two joint support ships with an original value of $2.448 billion.

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association has obtained intervenor status as Vancouver Island University attempts to obtain a court injunction to remove a pro-Palestinian encampment from its Nanaimo campus. It argues that the injunction would suppress the fundamental rights of protesters. “This affects everyone’s protest rights, whether or not you agree with the content of what the students are protesting,” said Ga Grant, staff litigation counsel for the group.

A group of West Vancouver neighbours say they’re hoping the sale of a beloved Altamont beach access can be halted before council gives the deal final approval. “It is a public piece of land that we as taxpaxers highly value,” said Sydney Sharpe, a local resident who uses the beach trail regularly. “Don’t rob us of a public amenity that we love and we use.”“People use this and it should be defended,” added Christopher Mollineaux, another neighbour.
