    Wandering through the exhibition Discovering Ancient Egypt with Dr Toon Sykora I’m surprised that he seems as excited as I am. Dr Sykora is curator of Egypt and Nubia collections from the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden or RMO) at Leiden in the Netherlands. He’s an archaeologist and Egyptologist and was in Brisbane to bed down this incredible exhibition from the RMO, which is showing at the Queensland Museum until August next year.

    It was the biggest event of the weekend but it wasn’t the state election – we’re talking about US artist and photographer Spencer Tunick’s mass nude photo shoot on the Story Bridge. It’s one of the two biggest art events of the year and both happened in the past week and both were born in Brisbane. Lindy Lee’s massive $14 million commissioned sculpture Ouroboros, which was created at Urban Art Projects foundry in Brisbane, was unveiled at the National Gallery of Australia. Lee is from Brisbane.

    Who knew that as well as being an author and artistic director of Brisbane Writers Festival, Jackie Ryan is an artist? That’s a surprise to some of us, although not to John Stafford and Jodie Cox of Onespace at South Brisbane. They have been engaged in sporadic projects with Ryan for a decade or so and recently offered her a solo exhibition at their spanking new gallery, which overlooks the Brisbane River at South Brisbane.

    Standing in a 1:1 replica of artist Archie Moore’s childhood bedroom, peering at his teenage sketches – many inspired by the visceral style of MAD magazine – pinned to the wall, a strange sense of vertigo begins to take hold. What starts out as an almost overwhelmingly intimate experience (because whose childhood homes do we visit as adults? Really, only those of people very close to us) spirals to a bigger and bigger scale.
