After years of searching for grand marshals to honor at Newton's annual Memorial Day parade, Harry Kaplan was relieved of the post this year. Instead, he'll be the one riding in the convertible at the head of the May 26 parade. As a past commander of both the Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts, Kaplan was an obvious choice years ago to help parade coordinators find veterans to honor as grand marshals.

Allamuchy Mountain State Park will expand by 473 acres with the staet's purchase of a former Boy Scout reservation. A coalition led by the Nature Conservancy, meanwhile, has secured nearly 455 acres across three sites in Sussex and Warren counties to expand "Bobcat Alley."For those who thought they had seen all of Allamuchy Mountain State Park, there is now another 473 acres, with a dozen new trails, to explore.

Improved drainage at Newton's Memory Park is moving closer with the Town Council's approval Monday of funding agreement for the nearly $1 million project. Located in the lowest-lying part town, the park has been unusable at times of the year because of slow drainage into the wetlands which become the Paulinskill River. Most affected is the Babe Ruth baseball field which is often water-logged in spring and into the summer.
