What’s the average cost of making reasonable adjustments for a disabled employee? I can’t give you a price, but I can tell you the value. A decade ago, Acas bought me an ergonomic chair, without which I would have been unable to stay in the job. It cost £800. Or is that £80 a year for 10 years? But think instead of the thousands of pounds saved in costs of recruitment and training to backfill me. That’s without considering the benefits to me.

Bruce Craig and Rachel Trease of Pinsent Masons were commenting after an overview of the offshore oil and gas sector’s health, safety and environment (HSE) performance for 2022, published last month by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) (52-page / 11MB PDF), found that 2022 was the safest year to work in offshore oil and gas since records began. According to the report, the total number of process safety-related ‘dangerous occurrences’ reported in 2022 fell 22% to the lowest level recorded.
