Johnell Smith III, 17, was sentenced Tuesday in Rock Island County Court in connection with the shooting death of a Milan teen in 2023. Our Quad Cities News crew was in the Rock Island County courtroom Tuesday, when family members and friends of both the deceased and Smith attended the sentencing hearing that lasted about an hour. Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson earlier identified the 17-year-old killed in Milan as Daniel “Danny” J. Taylor, of Milan.

At least one person was in custody after an incident Monday afternoon in the area of Howell Street and Rockingham Road, Davenport. Shortly before 2 p.m., the Our Quad Cities News crew saw two Rock Island squad cars head toward Davenport on the Centennial Bridge. Once our crew arrived, we saw technicians take prints from a Rock Island K9 Ford Explorer parked on the 200 block of South Howell Street.
