Thousands of spectators lined Commonwealth Avenue to cheer on the thousands of athletes tackling the Boston Marathon—the longest-running marathon in the world today—in the clear spring air Monday. Newton has the largest share of the marathon, and the Garden City provides an extra challenge in the form of several hills (including the infamous Heartbreak Hill near the east end of the city) to add a little torture to the journey.

Earth Day is Tuesday, and this weekend, Green Newton is going to spend a day showing the planet some love and educating the public on sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle habits. On Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., Green Newton’s fourth annual Earth Day Festival will take over a parking area at Newton North High School with vendors, information booths, games and an electric vehicle display.

After several years in limbo, the Northland Upper Falls development—now revised with more housing in lieu of office space—is set to go before the full City Council Tuesday night. “While I’m disappointed that the commercial space was largely eliminated, I’m glad to see the project moving forward and housing being built,” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller wrote in her Friday email update to the community.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller has made affordable housing one of the pillars of her tenure in City Hall. And on Tuesday, she was recognized for that with an award. The Fair Housing Committee—which advises City Hall on matters relating to fair housing and housing discrimination—awarded Fuller with the Sheila Mondshein Award, given annually to a person or organization that has shown outstanding leadership in promoting fair housing in Newton.
