Abby Hoover Managing EditorExpress Stop at 4815 Independence Ave. is home to a 180-foot collaborative mural focused on healthy lifestyles. It was the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 mural project. “What they have done is they’re creating a new space,” said Bobbi Baker Hughes, President and CEO of the Chamber. “It’s transforming this part of our community, and the transformation is evident with what’s here today, as opposed to what was here two years ago.

Abby Hoover Managing EditorFormer Aaron’s Rental:Back in 2019 when artist Armando Mesa, a Historic Northeast native, started the mural on the west side of the old Aaron’s Rental building in the 4800 block of Independence Avenue, the goal was to portray the diversity of the Historic Northeast community and pay homage to the area’s rich history. The finished product, entitled “Independence Avenue: Past, Present and Future,” does just that and is Mesa’s first large-scale mural work.

Abby Hoover Managing EditorFormer Mayfair cleanersIn 2018, Meredith Lucius and James Sterling Meid painted a mural entitled “In it Together” on the west wall of 2807 Independence Blvd. Lucius and Meid planned to showcase the neighborhood through their eyes and brushes for that year’s Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce summer mural program. It was one of five murals painted as a wider collaboration across the Historic Northeast that summer.

Rose Serrano opened Rose Marie’s Floral & Gift Shop in 1945 at 2659 Independence Avenue, located in an Art Deco style building that was built by an Italian immigrant family to serve as a specialty store, importing goods from Italy. Today, the building houses the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Economic Growth Gallery (EGG) and the Northeast News. A number of local women in business in Historic Northeast have jump started their businesses at the EGG space.

Residents of the Historic Northeast and beyond have the opportunity to attend the second 2023 International Taste and Tour on Independence Avenue on Friday, September 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.The tour, hosted by the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, will visit restaurants with a variety of cultural foods and drinks. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the Soma Shopping Center, visit two coffee shops, a Mexican bakery and a Mexican grocer, among other local favorites.

By Abby HooverManaging EditorAs temperatures soared last week in Kansas City, the metro’s cooling centers, homeless shelters and public buildings saw a spike in visitors. Hope Faith Homeless Assistance Campus in Paseo West, the city’s only day shelter for people experiencing homelessness, tried to plan ahead for their clients’ additional needs. “It has been a tough week,” Executive Director Doug Langner said Friday.

The Semi-Annual International Taste & Tour will be on Friday, September 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beginning at the American Sons of Columbus, 2415 Independence Ave., where guests will park and board a trolley for the journey along Independence Avenue to sample cuisine from all over the world. All of the restaurants included on this tour are members of the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. Thank you for your continued support.
