    Abby Hoover  Managing EditorExpress Stop at 4815 Independence Ave. is home to a 180-foot collaborative mural focused on healthy lifestyles. It was the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 mural project. “What they have done is they’re creating a new space,” said Bobbi Baker Hughes, President and CEO of the Chamber. “It’s transforming this part of our community, and the transformation is evident with what’s here today, as opposed to what was here two years ago.

    Abby Hoover  Managing EditorFormer Aaron’s Rental:Back in 2019 when artist Armando Mesa, a Historic Northeast native, started the mural on the west side of the old Aaron’s Rental building in the 4800 block of Independence Avenue, the goal was to portray the diversity of the Historic Northeast community and pay homage to the area’s rich history. The finished product, entitled “Independence Avenue: Past, Present and Future,” does just that and is Mesa’s first large-scale mural work.

    Abby Hoover  Managing EditorFormer Mayfair cleanersIn 2018, Meredith Lucius and James Sterling Meid painted a mural entitled “In it Together” on the west wall of 2807 Independence Blvd. Lucius and Meid planned to showcase the neighborhood through their eyes and brushes for that year’s Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce summer mural program. It was one of five murals painted as a wider collaboration across the Historic Northeast that summer.
