The United States is spending $1.7 trillion to overhaul and modernize its aging nuclear arsenal to compete with weaponry developed by other countries. Part of this plan directs Los Alamos National Laboratory to produce new cores for nuclear weapons called “plutonium pits.”But, a newly released report from the Union of Concerned Scientists argues for reusing existing cores from decommissioned weaponry to lower costs amid rising global nuclear tensions.

The State Wildlife Action Plan , aims to update the criteria for which species qualify, expand the list to include pollinating insects and better utilize data to inform decisions.

Colorado’s governor is set to sign a first-of-its-kind reform bill mandating property insurers account for wildfire risk mitigation in both their coverage decisions and pricing models. Some in New Mexico are looking at the legislation as an example that could work here as well. Lawmakers did pass a bill in this year’s legislative session to provide grants helping property owners harden homes against wildfire. But they did not make much progress tackling the dilemma of rising insurance costs.
