WOODLAND — After prevailing by 10 runs to advance in the Division VI CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs at home Tuesday, the roles were reversed on the road two days later for the Summerville High School varsity baseball team. The No. 7 Bears (14-14) were shut out Thursday afternoon at Joseph Trafican Memorial Field, falling 10-0 in five innings against second-ranked Woodland Christian (23-6) in the quarterfinals. “It was disappointing, for sure,” Summerville head coach John Baldwin said.

Allowing double-digit runs in the postseason is usually the final blow for a squad’s year, but that wasn’t the case for the Summerville High School varsity baseball team to begin the Division VI CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs. The No. 7 Bears (14-13) overcame a bumpy beginning Tuesday afternoon in Tuolumne to beat No. 10 Mariposa County (13-10) in six innings 20-10. “It was a really rocky start, we gave them a lot of runs early,” Summerville head coach John Baldwin said.

Friday night lights returned at Dunlavy Field to conclude last week as the Sonora High School girls battled on the turf for class supremacy in the annual powderpuff flag football games. The upperclassmen reigned supreme in each semifinals matchup, setting up a championship clash between the Class of 2025 and 2026. After the seniors led 14-0 at halftime, the juniors stormed back with 20-unanswered points to complete the comeback and win 20-14.

A streaky first season in the Trans Valley League came to a close Thursday night for the Sonora High School varsity baseball team after a 6-1 home loss versus Escalon at Bev Barron Field. “It’s interesting, because we had five errors defensively and two hits offensively. We weren’t tearing it up,” Wildcats head coach Chet Winham said. “Yeah, we didn’t get 10-runned and got to play seven innings tonight. It felt like it was a closer game against a pretty good team.

It was special for me to return to my old stomping grounds Thursday. I’m truly grateful and honored by the appreciation and love that the Woodland community has shown me, even seven months after I departed. Best of luck to @WCHS__Baseball in repeating atop the section and NorCal! https://t.co/Pv2GfRh4sr
