Stepping into Maruwu Seicha feels like discovering a hidden gem in downtown Palo Alto. The soft golden lights and warm wooden accents create a zen-like atmosphere perfect for an after-school treat, a study destination or a late-night snack run. Maruwu Seicha began its soft opening on Oct. 18 at 250 University Ave., with a grand opening planned for December. Walking in, we immediately noticed the combination of the earthy, comforting scent of matcha and roasted tea filling the air.

Yellow and magenta Diwali dresses, chalk-drawn rangoli on the floor, Henna tattoos and craft tables filled the rooms as Palo Alto held its “Festival of Lights: A Diwali Celebration” on Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Park Community Center. The event welcomed people of all ages, bringing the community together to celebrate the holiday. Ruthann Garcia, the Mitchell Park Library Services Manager, said the event was held under Palo Alto’s Celebrating Cultures Initiative.

On a brisk Thursday morning, mouth watering aromas fill Proper Foods, a cozy new spot hidden inside an office center in downtown Palo Alto. This modern eatery offers grab-and-go options for busy office workers with shelves filled with boxes, bowls and sandwiches, bringing a breath of freshness to the bustling street outside. Proper Food opened at 525 University Ave. on Oct. 29.

Though currently only open to staff, Sko Joe’s Coffee Cafe, operated by students in the Extensive Support Needs program, brings the warmth of freshly brewed coffee and cinnamon rolls from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. every Friday inside room 409 at Palo Alto High School. Paly Special Education teachers Dan Galluccio and Lisa Jauregui led a full rebrand of last year’s Future’s Cafe, transforming it into Sko Joe’s. The cafe serves coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and cinnamon rolls for $3 and fruit for $1.

With Palo Alto High School’s Spirit Week quickly approaching, Paly Associated Student Body hosted the Spirit Swap during lunch on Thursday to assist students in their scramble to gather spirit gear. Sophomore vice president Leilani Chen pitched the idea. “The goal behind the Spirit Swap was to create more equity among spirit week because it can get pretty expensive for students,” Chen said.
