With traditional Chinese opera reverberating across the room and lions weaving energetically through the crowd, the Palo Alto community welcomed the Year of the Snake yesterday at Palo Alto’s Mitchell Park Community Center. Hosting over 500 people of all ages, the event’s goal was to celebrate the different cultures across town, according to event coordinator Alicia Hulten.

These four things in a sushi roll before us at Tane Vegan Izakaya resemble a traditional Japanese sushi dish, however, it may come as a surprise that the roll is entirely vegan. While most Japanese restaurants have just a few vegetable-only dishes, the restaurant’s entire menu is based on vegan cuisine. Tane Vegan Izakaya opened its Palo Alto location a few months ago on 461 Emerson St., in downtown.

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, community members are feeling connected after forming new relationships at Palo Alto’s first “Friendsgiving” event, which took place Saturday at the Lucie Stern Community Center. Hosted by the Magical Bridge Foundation and Kafenia Peace Collective, the dinner featured community-building exercises set amid dancing, music and food from local restaurants.

Pumpkins, bowls, vases, cups and ornaments in colors ranging from red to purple and everything in between filled the tables of the ceramics studio. Eager students and visitors bustled around the room as they looked to purchase glass artwork. Palo Alto High School’s glassblowing and ceramics program held its annual Fall Fiery Arts Sale last Friday and Saturday, in order to raise funds for the arts program.
