    A historic steam engine that once powered New Lanark has been brought back to life at the world heritage site. The 1911 Petrie engine, located in the visitor centre at the former cotton spinning mill village, had been out of operation since 2018 after the volunteer who maintained it retired. The pandemic further delayed efforts to restore the machine.

    Visitors to a botanic garden in Dumfries and Galloway have a once-in-a-decade opportunity to see the flowers of the rare ‘sapphire tower’ plant, as it blooms outdoors in Scotland for the first time. The Puya alpestris plant, which is situated in the entrance to the walled garden in the Logan Botanic Garden in Port Logan, can take up to ten years to produce flowers that only last about two weeks.

    Cleansing workers will push ahead with strike action after rejected a revised pay offer. Cosla, which represents Scotland’s local authorities, proposed a 3.2% wage hike, backdated to April, which they said was a “strong, fair and credible” offer. But Unison said in cash terms it is “no better than what was already on the table”.

    US comedian and actor Bob Newhart has died at the age of 94 “after a series of short illnesses”, his publicist Jerry Digney announced in a statement. The accountant-turned entertainer “died at home in Los Angeles” a year after his wife of 60 years Virginia “Ginnie” Newhart, who died in April 2023. He was known for The Bob Newhart Show and had a recurring guest role on sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
