At the Paris Paralympics, half of the coverage was about women’s sport, which was less than at the Tokyo Paralympics. Dame Sophie is one of New Zealand’s greatest ever athletes and leaves sport as an eleven-time Paralympic gold medallist and multiple World Champion. Reflecting on her incredible career, Dame Sophie shared her gratitude and aspirations for the future. “Representing New Zealand in the pool has been the greatest honour of my life,” said Dame Sophie.

New Zealand snowboarder Zoi Sadowski-Synnott has landed the world's first triple cork in a women's slopestyle competition, which has also seen her take gold in the 2025 Aspen X Games slopestyle competition. The Wānaka local created history at Beijing 2022, winning New Zealand's first ever Winter Olympic gold medal after landing a hugely technical sequence in slopestyle. But the OIympic champion has pushed the boundaries again and the 23-year old can't quite believe what she has achieved in Aspen.

The accolades won’t stop coming for White Ferns all-rounder Amelia Kerr, who has been named the ICC’s women’s cricketer of the year. Already having banked the women’s Twenty20 player of the year honour, and player of the tournament in the White Ferns’ T20 World Cup victory in the UAE, Kerr has been awarded the Heyhoe Flint Trophy. The 24-year-old becomes the first New Zealander to win the award, on the back of a career-best 12 months, notably in the T20 format.

A New Zealand women's team has exceeded expectations to reach the quarterfinals of the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup in New Delhi. However, their journey came to an end after losing 71-26 to Uganda in the knockout stages of the competition on 17 January. Despite the defeat, the team's performance represented a significant milestone for the sport in New Zealand, where kho kho is slowly gaining recognition thanks to efforts by the Indian community to promote the ancient game.
