Watching your family home burn to the ground does something to a person: despair, heartbreak, defeat. But Michele Herring, who lost her home on Bakers Cemetery Road in Cheat Lake on Friday night, resolves to be positive. “We’re thankful to be alive,” she said Sunday, referring to her mother, her three adult children, her two grandchildren whom she often cared for in the home and herself. Not to say that the loss of a 250-year-old historic homestead isn’t devastating.

Reports of a standoff at Cranston & Edwards Law Firm at 1200 Dorsey Ave. in Morgantown have been received. An armed person is inside the law offices, and at least four officers have entered the building, according to multiple online reports. The situation began in early afternoon. Morgantown City Police, Monongalia County Sheriff, West Virginia State Police and Mon EMS are on scene. Check back with the Dominion Post for more details as the situation unfolds.

William Samuel “Bill” Arnett, 80, of Cheat Lake, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2024, surrounded by loved ones, in Mon Health Center following an extended illness. Bill was born August 22, 1944, in Morgantown, to the late James and Dorothy Arnett. In 1962, he graduated from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, where he was a standout lineman on the football team, an experience that provided lifelong memories.
