The Patrick County softball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Region 2C tournament. The Cougars fell to Chatham, 7-0, at Botetourt Sports Complex. The Cougars and Cavaliers split two contests this regular season. Chatham got the best of PC on Tuesday by outhitting the Cougars 10-4. Chatham's Cora Liggon threw a complete game and finished with 13 strikeouts to just one walk.

Martinsville High School senior Rickyah Mitchell-Hairston made it a perfect four-for-four at Friday’s Region 2C outdoor track and field championships at Glenvar High School. Mitchell-Hairston ran 12.69 seconds to win the region championship in the girls 100 meter dash. The Longwood University track commit won the region title in the event in all four years of her high school career.

With one region champion and three additional state qualifiers, the Bassett girls outdoor track & field team finished fifth at the Region 3D championships last week at Christiansburg High School. The Bengals girls 4x100 meter relay team won the region championship after running a time of 50.30 seconds. The relay was run by Nyasia Herndon, Brianna Taylor, Egypt Phillips, and Ilenia Norman. Taylor also finished second in the 100 meter dash (13.16 seconds) and fourth long jump (16-feet, 0.75-inches).

In his first season running track at Ferrum College, Jahmal Jones finished with two all-American finishes. Jones, a 2023 graduate of Martinsville High School, came home with two top-15 finishes at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships last weekend in Geneva, Ohio. On Day 1, he ran 21.42 in the men’s 200 meter dash to finished 14th. The former Bulldog followed with another 14th place finish in the 100 meter dash after running a time of 10.68 seconds.
