Two Indianapolis schools will merge and a third will become a charter school under changes approved by the Indiana Charter School Board this month. The board met on May 8 to hear requests from the two merging schools — ACE Prep and Circle City Prep on the northeast side — and Cold Spring School, a school on the northwest side that’s looking for more independence. In both cases, school leaders said restructuring would secure financial stability for years to come.

Need a place for your kid to hang out before or after school? Even though this school year is just winding down, it’s never too early to start thinking about next year. Registration is open for The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis’ 2025-26 Before and After School program. The YMCA works with 10 districts and several charter schools in Central Indiana to provide care for students. Most programs are run directly within students’ schools.

Indianapolis Public Schools families are invited to a free health fair May 10. The event will offer free workout classes for all ages and fitness levels. Attendees can also learn about district health initiatives, sports and club offerings, and other community wellness resources. The health fair is open to all IPS students, staff and their families. Anyone participating in on-site workout classes must sign a waiver when they arrive.

Indianapolis Public Schools leaders are looking for parents to help decide the future of public education in the city. Last week, the district opened a nomination process for parents who want to join the new Indianapolis Local Education Alliance. The alliance comes out of a charged legislative session that saw debate over school funding and how best to educate students in Indianapolis’ district and charter schools.

Looking for a free summer activity for your teen? Indianapolis’ Summer in the City program will offer wellness, STEM, culinary and performance arts based activities for seven weeks this summer. The program runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays from June 2 to July 18. Youth ages 12 to 18 years old are encouraged to participate. Meals and transportation will be provided to Municipal Gardens, 1831 Lafayette Road. Families can sign up online. Registration closes May 18.
