BUCK CREEK TOWNSHIP — The owners of a nearly century-old fourth-generation Hancock County orchard have stated their opposition to a proposed large-scale planned unit development across the street from their farm. Hancock County Area Plan Commission will hear a proposal May 27 to turn 775 acres of farmland east of Indianapolis Regional Airport into a large data center campus, called the Hancock County MegaSite Planned Unit Development.

After several days of confusion, Hancock County is officially being placed on the state’s disaster emergency list, allowing the county to be eligible for financial assistance from Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Misty Moore, director of Hancock County Homeland Security, said during the April 15 Hancock County Commissioners meeting that state officials did not include Hancock County on the April 11 disaster declaration and that the county would be listed in a future declaration.

As 2026 budget talks loom, Hancock County Council received information about potential salary increases for county officials for the next budget year. Hancock County Treasurer Jane Klemme and Hancock County Clerk Lisa Lofgreen presented to the council a report from the salary study panel, which consists of Klemme, Lofgreen, county auditor Debra Carnes, and council members Mary Noe and Robin Lowder.

Greenfield City Council will wait at least one more month to make a final vote on the Hawk’s Tail Golf Course annexation plan. At Wednesday’s meeting, the council tabled second and third readings for the three Hawk’s Tail annexation ordinances until the May 14 meeting. This is because the ordinances need to be sent back to the city planning commission for its approval.
