To quote the old wisdom: “The years start coming / And they don’t stop coming”. And by all the heavens to Betsy, 2024 just kept on coming. Elections demanding your attention, political unrest permeating everyday life, continuing genocides televised in our faces everyday, and about a million other things (maybe some of them good? Who knows at this point) since January 1st 2024 rolled into our lives.

[Run For Cover; 2024]Boston trio Horse Jumper of Love’s latest album Disaster Trick acts like a great exhale. One that you can make in the safety of your bedroom, where you can let out just enough rage to not catch the attention of your parents. Opening track “Snow Angel” captures this dynamic from the start, when slow guitar strums give way to grungy rock just seconds later.

[Columbia; 2024]If the title “Ice Cream Piano” – the opening track to Vampire Weekend’s outstanding new album Only God Was Above Us – reads like a joke, you’d be correct. Or at the very least, it’s a slight distortion; a wordplay that feels like a master key into the band’s approach to history writ large as well as their own. They recognize that history is an unreliable narrator, that the past is prone to idealization and sanitization, and what survives is left in part up to luck.

[Sub Pop; 2024]Perhaps the greatest strength of Atlanta-based trio Omni has always been their efficiency. Their sound has been defined by their use of space, their confidence grounded in letting rhythms and hooks speak for themselves. This was apparent on their earlier albums Deluxe and Multi-task but taken a step further on the shiny but more minimalist Networker, their 2019 debut LP for Sub Pop. Yet there was always the sense that the band had more up their sleeves.
