[Funeral Party; 2024]Out of nowhere, and in a minimum amount of time, 2025 appeared, and carried on its wings the first cult-album of the still young year. A surprise release from a band that many figured was retired, recorded in November, dropped online on Christmas day, with a proper release in spring, Raw Blue is only Whirr‘s fourth full length.

Elections demanding your attention, political unrest permeating everyday life, continuing genocides televised in our faces everyday, and about a million other things (maybe some of them good? Who knows at this point) since January 1st 2024 rolled into our lives.

[Smith Hyde Productions; 2024]There was a weird moment in the middle of the 2000s when, all of a sudden, a lot of young people started abandoning popular music in favour of techno. There was a pseudo-intellectual posture to the entire movement, as if electronic music was automatically more mature just because it concentrated on construction and composition more than rock or pop. Fair, maybe it was the drugs and sleazy air of avant-garde that suggested some sort of immediate depth.

[Nuclear Blast; 2024]One aspect of metal I always found particularly curious was its reliance on nostalgia. Look back to the origin mythos of the genre, Black Sabbath’s song “Black Sabbath” off their debut album, Black Sabbath (and people say there’s no humour in metal); the track is an ominous, slowed-down blues track that imagines a demonic entity – possibly the devil – visiting a village, likely during the dark ages.
