It was our early studies that noted hippocampal hyperactivity in people with active psychosis which impressed me with the potential role of this brain region in psychosis, especially given its primary function in memory. Our initial laboratory studies focused on excitatory and inhibitory biomarker signals in human postmortem hippocampus by subfield in schizophrenia (SZ) and healthy control (HC), which identified evidence of dentate gyrus (DG) failure and CA3/CA1 hyperactivity.
