To the editor,The recent article (Banks' gripes with big credit unions are gaining momentum, November 5, 2024) on the banking lobby's criticisms of credit unions' growth within the market reveals banks don't understand the role credit unions play in communities and at the kitchen table for more than 140 million Americans. It also fails to recognize the fundamental differences of these institutions.

The recent article in American Banker on small-business lending (Confessions of a credit union executive turned community banker, August 14) is troubling because it seems determined to twist credit unions' incredible legacy of service to small businesses into something questionable. The author's personal anecdotes ignore the fundamental truth of the credit union industry: The credit union tax status exists because of credit unions' unique, member-owned cooperative structure. It's that simple.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) was established by Congress in 1970 as an overhaul of the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions. The agency was created to regulate credit unions and protect the newly made National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. All this funding came from credit unions, not taxpayers. As an independent regulator, the NCUA needs to focus on independent regulation.
