RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has issued a State of Emergency ahead of the upcoming winter storm. Stein shared the news in a Tuesday morning press conference, accompanied by North Carolina Department of Public Safety's Emergency Management Director William Ray and North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins. Starting Wednesday, the winter storm is forecast to impact much of the state, particularly central and eastern parts of North Carolina.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Reality Goodwin, the Hampton mother accused of leaving her three young children in a sinking car in Newport News has been sentenced after being found guilty on multiple charges. Goodwin was found guilty of four counts of assault on law enforcement, each resulting in a 12-month sentence. All of that time has been suspended. She was also found guilty on three counts of child abuse and neglect, each carrying a five year sentence; all of that time was suspended as well.

GLOUCESTER, Va. — A man was arrested on Tuesday for multiple sex crimes against a child in Gloucester County. According to the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office (GCSO), they received an anonymous tip on Nov. 28 that an unidentified 40-year-old man – late identified as Jeffrey Masnaghetti of Salem City, Virginia – was victimizing a girl in Gloucester County. The tip indicated that Masnaghetti had sexual contact with the girl and may possess explicit photographs or videos of the incident.
Mother, son charged with murder of Norfolk grandmother waive preliminary hearing

NORFOLK, Va. — Heather Cummings and Clifton Cummings, the mother and son charged with conspiracy to commit murder and the second-degree murder of an 81-year-old Norfolk woman waived their preliminary hearings Monday. The two will now face a grand jury on Jan 2. Court documents and an obituary revealed that Heather, 53, and Clifton, 24, were the daughter and grandson of Cleo Loizides, the woman killed at a Norfolk senior living home.
One person hurt after Yorktown Motor Lodge fire

YORK COUNTY, Va. — One person is hurt after a fire broke out at Yorktown Motor Lodge motel Tuesday morning. Just before 9:00 a.m., the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety was called to the motel, finding heavy smoke and fire coming from one of the rooms and attic area. One room and the attic area were extensively damaged by the fire, and several other rooms were damaged by smoke. This fire was contained to one wing of the business.
USNS Patuxent returns to Norfolk just in time for the holidays

NORFOLK, Va. — The fleet replenishment oiler USNS Patuxent returned to Naval Station Norfolk Tuesday morning after a successful 10-month deployment. During its 306-day deployment, the Norfolk-based ship focused on resupplying 54 U.S. Navy and 32 Allied Surface Combatant ships in the North and Baltic seas. The Patuxent provided food, stores and more than 12.9 million gallons of fuel to these ships, making it so they did not have to pull into port and could remain on station indefinitely.

NORFOLK, Va. — 22-year-old Robert L. Jackson has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of 19-year-old Navy Seaman Haniah Sturdivant in 2021. Jackson, who is from Florida, met Sturdivant through one of his friends who was in the Navy when he came to Norfolk in April 2021.

HAMPTON, Va. — A person is injured after a shooting in Hampton Wednesday afternoon, according to the Hampton Police Division. The shooting happened in the 700 block of LaSalle Ave. Police arrived on the scene shortly after 4 p.m., where a person was suffering what they call non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not shared any further details about the victim or the suspect in this incident. 13News Now has reached out to Hampton police for further details.
