DALLAS — Long before his bleak final years, when he struggled with mental illness and lived mostly on the streets, Victor Carl Honey joined the Army, serving honorably for nearly a decade. And so, when his heart gave out and he died alone 30 years later, he was entitled to a burial with military honors.

The share of children ages 5 to 17 enrolled in public schools fell by almost 4 percentage points from 2012 to 2022, an NBC News analysis of Census Bureau data found, even as the overall population grew. NBC News’ analysis found:87.0% of children were enrolled in public school in 2022, compared to 90.7% in 2012.

In my shared office, nestled among seven desks, a rotund older woman opens a zip lock bag of cereal and pours it into a huge salad bowl. The milk follows. With loud slurps she talks at me, her mouth full, and hurriedly shovels the cereal with a large spoon. Never to win a poker game, I doubt my grimace went unnoticed. Lunch breaks are lost to emails, staff meetings, yard duty — we’re all caught up in the whirlwind of tasks and deadlines. I urge you to take time to consider the value of good manners.

The shrill alarm erupts from my mobile phone at 6:45 am, piercing my dark bedroom. Heavy eyelids flutter open reluctantly, briefly entertaining the hope that perhaps, by some miraculous stroke of luck, it might be the weekend. No such luck, it is Tuesday. Rhythmic snoring from Oscar, the cavoodle at the foot of the bed, a reassuring presence in the pre-dawn gloom. With a resigned sigh, I relinquish the warmth of the covers and reluctantly begin the familiar routine of the weekday morning.

Super Tuesday voters in North Carolina and Arkansas will encounter stricter voter ID requirements when they head to the polls, as part of a wave of voter ID laws enacted across the country during the last four years. Eight states have enacted voter ID laws since the 2020 election, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures: Arkansas, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio and Wyoming. The rash of new laws affects 29 million adults.

Laser pointers, even those sold for less than $20 online, can distract pilots or cause flash blindness — of particular danger during takeoff and landing, when many incidents are reported. “When you point a laser at a cockpit to blind the pilots, you’re not attacking two pilots.
