    Whenever I hear that negotiation is a word game, I tend to shake my head just a little. You can’t talk about negotiation without advanced communication skills and that means understanding the language of your body and voice. In my book Gravitas I’ve focused heavily on the ancient Greek and Romans’ lost art of communication and how those skills can be applied today. That’s right. Everything old is new again. Studying these civilisations revealed the ancient Romans knew the value of communicating well.

    The lecturer asked for input, and I was desperate for him to ignore me. I knew the answer, but if I came off mute, he would realise I was listening with one ear in, while also cooking dinner, adjudicating an argument with my kids, and checking Teams to make sure nothing from the work day needed my attention. I’m not the only professional trying to upskill who thought, “Something’s gotta’ give”. The answer for me was loud learning.

    Should you move to a different city for uni or your first job? I was itching to leave the town I grew up in. I had a loving family, great friends, a beach within walking distance, and yet I was desperate to know how it felt to be on my own. I think I wanted life to start: To pull away my safety net and see if I could tightrope my way through life's unsteadying moments. I got my wish, in the form of a place at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst - three hours from my home on Sydney's northern beaches.
