A few years ago, in a moment of intense but all-too-common desperation, I impulse-hired a nanny from Care.com based off a single 15-minute FaceTime call. She was a couple years older than me, the mother of three boys, and looking to make a little money while she worked on starting a small business. I figured, great, she’s a mom, she’ll “get it.” I expected she would quickly intuit how to care for and entertain two small children.

"Cutting Teeth" By Chandler Baker c. 2023, Flatiron Books $27.99, 320 pages You couldn't wait for that first little tooth to come in. It was a milestone in your baby's life, an indication of a readiness for big-kid food and a regular place at the family table. Oh, how you love that adorable, heart-melting toothy smile, but be careful. As in the new book, "Cutting Teeth" by Chandler Baker, a mouthful of dentin means a mouth that can bite. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in a baby carriage…and then comes the fear. In CUTTING TEETH, the latest in Chandler Baker’s repertoire of darkly feminist thrillers, modern motherhood is exposed as an unachievable set of standards when a disturbing medical condition begins to make the rounds at a picture-perfect preschool.

My son had just turned 2 when he developed a taste for human flesh. “Everything’s fine,” his preschool teacher blurted at the start of that first call. I think there must be an expectation that good parents fly into an immediate state of panic at the sight of their child’s school on caller ID. But she was light-hearted. “It happens!
