A thoroughly researched novel that's bogged down with unnecessary detail. This murder mystery, set in the city of Split in what is now Croatia, is steeped in early-20th-century Europe’s roiling politics. The year is 1936. Two hundred and fifty miles above the Earth, a space station goes round and round. Over the course of 24 hours, the astronauts inside experience sunrise and sunset 16 times.

After her first husband is crushed under an overloaded turnip cart, she must initially raise her son, Kit, on her own.
