A lawyer representing the families of three Bondi Junction stabbing victims say their clients had expressed "support" for a coronial inquest this month. Last April, Joel Cauchi fatally stabbed six people and seriously injured several others inside a Westfield shopping centre in Sydney's east. The inquest will take place over five weeks, and will include family statements and expert reports from psychiatrists and a security expert.

With students heading back to school, there's concern among parents and the wider community amid a spate of antisemitic attacks and vandalism in Sydney. Overnight on Thursday, NSW Police were contacted after a Jewish school in Sydney's eastern suburbs was spray painted with antisemitic graffiti. The Mount Sinai College and a property next door in Maroubra were targeted. NSW Police are also continuing with their investigations following the discovery of a caravan filled with explosives in Dural.

Around 80,000 students have received their Higher School Certificate (HSC) results online today, but the day has less significance than previous years, an expert says, as thousands of students have already got their university offers in hand. Nearly 70,000 were awarded their HSC and another 9,500 completed at least one HSC course. Just over a quarter of the students were distinguished achievers, which meant they achieved 90 to 100 or equivalent, a band six grade, in one or more subjects.

When Abigail Barfield suffered a traumatic brain injury playing football in 2021, she developed migraines and headaches that impacted her school studies. "That is something that I really had to struggle through … also the emotional side of that where the vulnerability is really difficult to deal with," Ms Barfield said. But the Pymble Ladies College student tried her best to study hard amid her health challenges. She has now been announced as 2024's HSC highest achiever for Aboriginal Studies.
